More Hmar news magazines are likely to close down unless the public speak out in support of free press.
It maybe the same old story but recent pressure tactics and mild verbal threats by ‘hnam sipais’, ‘individuals’ and ‘groups’ on leading Hmar news magazines are matter of concern. In their attempt to get their messages ‘as it is’, many of us purportedly had asked some editors to comply to our demands.
Under such circumstances it is not only the readers but also the public interest that is under threat. The public may think that the threat to the press is none of its business, but history has shown that autocratic and dictatorial rule always wanted to control the press.
Recent developments are a clear indication that certain elements in the tribe are realising the power of the press and are intensifying their publicity efforts. Not satisfied with their leaflets/ handouts/words of mouth they are now gunning the mainstream Hmar press by asking some editors to toe their lines.
It is necessary that ‘hnam sipais’ and ‘every individuals’ realise the responsibility of the press toward the public. Interference in the editorial and news contents are a clear sign of censorship which will only mislead the public. The recent example of Hmathlir Magazine is a good example which clearly shows our immaturity to deal with jounalism as a profession. We have failed to give free flow of information from all sides by threatening the publishers. It’s a shame on us, the public and also to those who try to use muscle power.
The Hmar press virtually had been responsible and neutral and this trend must be allowed to continue. It is high time ‘hnam sipais’, ‘leaders’ and ‘individuals’ remember their promise to the people and the purpose for which they had set out. Claiming to be a champion for the cause of democracy and a free society and doing things that contradicts democratic norms will only lead us on the path of chaos in our society.
We must realise that people have the right to freedom of thought and expression. And this freedom must not be taken away at any cost under any circumstances. Acceptance of the free and balance flow of information is a must for building a solid foundation for any community.

Reliable sources in the press revealed that, of late, the press had been under pressure from one or the other groups who wanted use the press in their own way or at least put news only in their favour. However, the press somehow must find a way to function unhindered.
However small or minor any pressure put on the Hmar press is far serious and real. Some of the favourite magazines which the public love to read so much may close down unless there is clear indication and support to the ailing press.
It is now up to the public to decide whether it should stand up and speak out for a free Hmar press.
