Tipaimukh Woes

April 24th, 2008 by elfhmar

Elf Hmar, 24 April, 2008

Yet again, Tipaimukh is in the media not for good but for all the dark events taking place over there. It seems as though good things are a scarcity in this god-forsaken region since 2006. First, in 2006 it was the mass rape, molestation of Hmar women and torture and planting of IEDs by proscribed UNLF and KCP militants. Read the rest of this entry »

Abuse of Justice

January 21st, 2008 by elfhmar

By Elf Hmar, 19th January, 2008

Two years is a very long time. But what would it be for those who are living with severe traumatised past? Even a single day would have stretched like a millennium. Ugly memories of rape, molestation, loss, shame, helplessness, forced upon them still haunts their everyday lives to numb them. But this, unfortunately, is the fate of the 27 Hmar sisters in Tipaimukh who were unmercifully molested sexually and raped by the cadres of the UNLF and KCP armed outfits in January 2006. The Cancerous Conscience

April 2nd, 2007 by elfhmar

Elf Hmar, 2nd April, 2007

The Kuki students protest in Delhi on March 23, 2007 against the abduction of more than 400 Kuki villagers near the Indo-Burma border, destructive menace posed by planted Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) in villagers frequented routes, paddy field and forest in the hills of Manipur, and the massively silenced hurdles the villagers are made to bear in their abnormal life bring forth yet the same old denials of truth, which already failed to find a space in our society, by and large, today. Injustice, Lies and More Lies Endangers Peace

March 31st, 2007 by elfhmar

Elf Hmar, 10th April, 2007

In the last fifteen months or so, human rights in Manipur has brought about a new dimension on the issue and also evoked a lot of murmurings. Most of them were, unfortunately, of disbelief on the role of the “new” actors of crime against humanity. Read the rest of this entry »

Unappreciated Intrusions

January 12th, 2007 by elfhmar

Elf Hmar, January 07, 2006

The joint press statement of four insurgent groups in Manipur (The Sangai Express, 06 January 2007) namely—the KCP, KYKL, PREPAK and UNLF on the contentious Tipaimukh Dam project is, somewhat, unsettling. The reaction when I first glimpsed the bolded headline “KCP, KYKL, PREPAK, UNLF ban Tipaimukh Dam” and read the report was an uneasy cough. Read the rest of this entry »

Tipaimukh: In the Quest for Survival

December 5th, 2006 by elfhmar

Elf Hmar, November 28, 2006

The year 2006 is indeed a remarkable year for Tipaimukh. The issues arising out of the region has resulted in drawing mixed reactions as well as responses from different parts from the globe. As is the case with Manipur, I cannot help but be amused, yet again, by the controversial issues it evoked to this day. To tell the truth, these are just the tip of the iceberg. Time will reveal more, if given the chances, of the realities, which had been checked due to the complete failure of governance in this region. The doubting Thomas will doubt more because this region has been in the cut-off period for a long time; Thomas has, now, a glimpse of the unfortunate realities that is gnawing the region. However, the doubts still seem to continue. Read the rest of this entry »

Angels of Death

November 14th, 2006 by elfhmar

Elf Hmar, November 12, 2006

The mocking realities of any events related to ‘Manipur’ provoke a sense of ironic amusement that raise the question on how lengthy we can go in this manner. The undeniable truth of what remains of Manipur is that it has turned into an amusement park for everybody. The status quo in Manipur today is that which way you look, death stares at you with no room for escape. And that is the Angel of Death, borne out from Manipur’s very own womb. Quit Playing Games

October 9th, 2006 by elfhmar

Elf Hmar, 08 October 2006

The exaggerated reactions over issues, where there is an absence of such over related issues, which, however, actually demands the same reflective action has been of great concern today. The proposed quit notice threatened to be issued against the Meitei populace in Churachandpur by the Hmar National Army (HNA) seems to open up a lot of consciousness (though negatively) over the delicateness of issues arising out of the UNLF and KCP cadres’ atrocities against the Tipaimukh people early this year. Unfortunately, the progress is inclining to fulfil the “tooth for tooth and eye for an eye.” Read the rest of this entry »

A game called ‘Tipaimukh’

September 9th, 2006 by elfhmar

It does feel great when you see the name of your place and stories of your people gets highlighted in the media, be it in the electronic or print. In spite of knowing your land lacks everything in the modernity sense, you someway and somehow feel proud to see that it still found a space in some corner. This is true for the Tipaimukh—a place I call my home and land. Read the rest of this entry »

Repatriating the Hmar Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs)

June 22nd, 2006 by elfhmar

After a long knock, the reluctant Government of Manipur has finally made a shrug to at least open its door—though partially—to welcome back the hundreds of displaced Hmar villagers to their bon-a-fide land in Manipur. These Tipaimukh villagers who were displaced due to landmine threats, torture, rape, and the valley based militants’ reign of terror, had been staying at designated camps in Mizoram since early 2006.
